Bond likely for reserved private medical students

PUBLISH DATE 14th December 2017

Around 25% of students from the state’s private medical colleges who belong to reserved categories may have to mandatorily serve in rural or tribal areas for a year after completing their course.

The government is likely to make the service mandatory from the coming academic year. This would be the first time that the bond service is extended to a section of students in private colleges.

The state government totally or partially funds the education of these students admitted in private colleges. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research has therefore submitted a proposal to the state seeking to bring these students under the ambit of mandatory rural service.

Students from these colleges were exempted from the mandatory service till date. Around 600 to 650 students from private colleges, or 25% of the total strength, usually get the benefit of government’s freeship schemes. “Since the government spends lakhs on tuition fees of students belonging to SC, ST, NT and OBC categories in private colleges, they too should serve in rural areas. The requirement of doctors in rural and tribal areas is not fulfilled with just MBBS graduates from government colleges. We need more doctors in these areas and the numbers we have are not sufficient. We have, therefore, proposed to make it mandatory for this section of students,” said Dr Pravin Shingare, director, DMER.

The proposal is submitted to the medical education department and a final nod is awaited. Another official said students from government colleges have claimed that the mandatory bond service for them is unfair.

Currently, only students from government colleges are expected to sign an indemnity bond at the time of admission.
