CAT 2018 Result Analysis

PUBLISH DATE 6th January 2019

No girl made it to CAT 2018’s 100 percentile club this year

21 Boys Got 99.99 Score, 19 Of Whom Are Engineers

Eleven of the two lakh candidates who took CAT 2018 have made it to the 100 percentilers’ club. Among them, two are from Jadavpur University in Kolkata, and one each from Karnataka and Bihar. This year marked the largest count of girls who took the CAT but none made it to the top club.

Another 21, again all males, scored 99.99 percentile; 19 of them are engineers. Each IIM will now release its list of shortlisted candidates for the flagship post-graduate programme 2019-21batch. A host of students from IIT-Powai and other engineering institutes such as VJTI and ICT have scored above 99 percentile. “As expected, the scaled scores are down 10-12%. A score of 174 fetched a 99 percentile in CAT 2017 compared with 155 this year. Similar trends are noticed for 98, 95 and 90 percentile benchmarks. The Quant section, which was difficult, is largely responsible for the fall in scores,” said Hemang Panchmatia, chief mentor of a coaching institute.

Ever since additional marks were introduced for women and non-engineers in 2010 by IIMs, the class profile has changed, increasing the diversity. IIM-Calcutta released a list of 1,990 candidates, of whom 43% are females and one is transgender. “I think women have done well. The IIM-Calcutta shortlist is an indicator of the fact that a large percentage of women has done well in CAT,” said Sumanta Basu, convenor, CAT 2018. IIM- Kozhikode has shortlisted 17,002 candidates, of whom 3,338 are female. “The performance of women and nonengineers has been consistent with last year. But many more female candidates took the CAT this year and the shortlisted data will reflect their larger numbers too,” said Debashis Chatterjee, IIM-Kozhikode director.

17-yr-old Hyd girl among youngest to clear CAT

At 17, Samhitha Kasibhatta has become one of the youngest candidates to crack the highly competitive Common Admission Test (CAT) this year. She scored 95.95 percentile in her first attempt, and wants to get into corporate finance.

“I am hoping my scores will get through either of the IIMs (Kochi, Lucknow, Kozhikode) or top-notch institutes like S P Jain (Mumbai) and Faculty of Management Studies (Delhi). Finance is my area of interest,” said the teenager. She confessed that it wasn’t ‘all work and no play’, during the run-up to the exams on November 25. “In fact, I spent the day before the test binge-watching cartoons,” Samhitha said. Her parents are IT professionals.
