FIFA launches executive sports management course

PUBLISH DATE 1st April 2019

The part-time executive programme will help mid-level and senior professionals enhance their professional skill-set as sports managers

We know India has immense potential to grow its sports industry. The factors contributing to the increased interest in sports in India include the success of various sports leagues, a rising interest of the corporate sector and film fraternity in acquiring ownership of sports leagues. However, sports management as a career is still an untapped industry leading to lack of professionals in the field of sports.

FIFA/CIES University Network that includes FIFA, world’s governing football body and CIES (The International Centre for Sports Studies), Switzerland, have launched an Executive Programme in Sports Management in India to train professionals to meet the demands of the job market in the sports industry.

“Indians are looking at sports management as a career. We have record numbers of Indians applying for the fulltime FIFA Master Programme in Europe. We felt that most of the applicants are not adequately prepared or experienced enough to be selected for the programme and need access to training in the home country,” said Pierre Lanfranchi, scientific coordinator at CIES, Switzerland.

The FIFA/CIES Executive Programme in Sports Management provides training in six essential fields of sports management, namely sports event management, finance, communication, management, sports law, marketing/sponsorship. The first batch will commence in September 2019 and the programme will be taught at the Pillai Institute of Management Studies and Research (PiMSR), Mumbai.

“Apart from providing opportunities to more players and coaches, the burgeoning sporting industry will also need match officials, event management executives, analysts, agents, media and communications professionals,” added Lanfranchi.

To be eligible to apply to the programme, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university or a degree from a foreign university as recognised by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and must be able to demonstrate an interest in sports. The tuition fee for Indian students is Rs1, 85,000 and USD 4,000 for international students.
