Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, and Cipla Foundation will jointly build a modern chemistry research laboratory for undergraduate students. The laboratory would be built to develop cutting edge facilities for scientific learning and research accessible to students and teachers in India.
The proposed 30,000sqft laboratory will provide facilities to scale-up experiments, advanced laboratories to conduct smaller research projects and industrial research training.
Programme coordinator A A Natu said the laboratory can be used by undergraduate students from IISER. The foundation stone-laying ceremony of the laboratory was conducted recently at IISER.
This partnership is a significant step and takes Cipla's focus on scientific innovation forward. YK Hamied stressed on the need to create world-class infrastructure to encourage enquiry and inno vation and help in creating scientists of tomorrow. He added, “If we focus on technology for the present, we will soon be obsolete. We need to focus on research and build technology for the future.“
The laboratory will be on a par with the most advanced facilities in the world and enable virtual and interactive simulations to visualize chemistry concepts and phenomena. It will further strengthen science learning at IISER Pune. It will provide facilities for scaled-up experiments, advanced laboratories to conduct research projects and training for industrial research.
It will also enable the much needed industry-academia partnerships and training of teachers and students to ensure learning is closely connected with real-life applications through its outreach programme, added Natu.
Rumana Hamied, chief executive officer, Cipla Foundation said, “Cipla Foundation believes that access to quality education is a catalyst for building productive lives. This IISER-Cipla Foundation partnership will give students and teachers the opportunities for inventiveness, exploration and discovery.“
K N Ganesh, director, IISER Pune said, “IISER shares Cipla Foundation's vision that science has the responsibility of building sustainable solutions to address community needs. With this infrastructure support, IISER aims to provide global education standards in the country“.
