JEE Advanced 2018: No. of seats set to increase across IITs with separate merit list for girls

PUBLISH DATE 14th January 2018

In a bid to ensure that the number of female students, at each IIT campus in the country, is at least 14 percent, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) has been directed by the human resource development ministry to publish separate merit lists for girls from the 2018-2019 academic session.

As per a Times of India report, the IIT authorities are expected to publish the "separate vertical" for girl after computation of the percentage of girls who have got admission through the common merit list.

This implies that if a particular IIT's common merit list only has 6 per cent girl students, the campus will be required to bring out another girl-only list to so that the 14 per cent quota is met.

However, the HRD ministry has noted that the number of girls to be admitted – to achieve the 14 per cent quota – must be "supernumerary", which means that the number of boys admitted to the college cannot drop below the number admitted in 2017.

Significantly, with this new rule, all 23 IITs, including the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, will have to increase the number of seats. This means that the total number of admissions from across the IITs in 2018 will reportedly see a jump from 10,988 in the previous year to 11, 509.

The Times of India reported that the recent circular ministry by the ministry was issued after consultations with law ministry. However, a few dissenting voices have already raised objections against what they see as "the introduction of gender reservation in IIT without calling it by that name".

A senior IIT official told the daily, "The MHRD instruction, asking for a separate merit list for girls, actually introduces reservation for girls without calling it that".

Many officials were of the opinion that the move to publish a second girls-only list could perhaps result in deserving male candidates losing out on the admissions to perhaps less meritorious students.

"This will also put more pressure on IITs, who will now have to arrange for more bridge-course or remedial classes for students getting through to IITs just because we want a pre-determined percentage of girls on the campus," the daily quoted an IIT teacher as saying.

Meanwhile, officials told TOI that all existing reservations would be applicable proportionately for the extra seats.
