JEE Advanced 2018: Paper 2 tough & paper 1 moderate

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur conducted the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced test today (May 20, 2018) in two sessions — for Paper I 9 am to 12 noon and Paper II from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Around 166,204 candidates appeared for the exam that was conducted through the online mode only, across the country.


The JEE Advanced answer keys for 2018 will be released online at jeeadv.ac.in by Tuesday, May 29, 2018.

Quick Analysis

Most students that we have spoken to found the paper difficult. Many are disheartened. There were more negative marks, so scoring could be difficult. For the integer-type questions the range has increased and it becomes difficult for the students to answer those questions, said Vinay Kumar, MD, Rao IIT-Academy.

Paper 2

Immediate reaction of students after Paper 2: Mathematics tough, Physics, Chemistry easy

Candidates found the overall level of paper moderate level. Mathematics section was difficult compared to Physics & Chemistry.
No mistakes reported till now as complete paper is yet to be analysed.
Total no. of questions (54 questions) remains same as last year however total marks of JEE Advanced Paper-2 has changed from 183 to 180 marks this year.
Compared to Paper-1, students reported Paper-2 was relatively tough.
Students feel this year's paper was tougher compared to 2017.

Quick Comparison with respect to last Year

The Matching Type questions had two columns to be matched. Last year (2017), there were three column questions as well.
Equal weightage was given to class XI & XII.
The Total marks of each Paper reduced from 183 to 180.
As Paper was conducted on Computer Based Mode, neither print of question Paper nor copy of Response Sheet was given to students.

Paper 1: Maths easy, Physics relatively difficult and Chemistry of Moderate level

1. Max Marks: 180 & Duration: 3 hrs

2. The Paper had (54) questions in total.

3. The Paper-1 had (03) three parts- Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics.

4. Max. Marks for each paper was 60.

5. In each part there are three sections- Sec-1 (Max. marks-24), Sec-2 (Max. Marks-24) & Sec-3 (Max. marks-12)

6. Sec-1 had (06) six questions with four options in which one or more than one options were correct. Marking scheme in this section is +4 in case all options are correct, +1 for each correct response, 0 marks for no response and -2 for all other cases. Maximum marks for this section was 24.

7. Sec-2 had (08) Eight questions with correct response being a Numerical value. For each question, the correct numerical value was to be rounded off to second decimal place.( eg: 6.25,7.00,-127.30). The making scheme was +3 for the correct response and 0 marks in all other cases. Maximum marks for this section was 24.

8. Sec-3 had 2 Comprehensions with two questions in each comprehension. Each comprehension had two questions with 4 options in which only one option was correct.Marking scheme in this section is +3 if the correct option is marked, 0 marks if none of the options is marked and -1 in all other cases. Maximum marks for this section was 12.

Immediate reaction of students & Comparison with respect to last year:

• They found the overall level of paper moderate level but not easy.

• Some students have reported Maths as easy but Physics relatively difficult. Chemistry was reported of Moderate level.

• No mistakes reported till now as complete paper is yet to be analysed.

• Total no. of questions (54 questions) remains same as last year, however, total marks of Paper-1 has changed from 183 to 180 marks this year.

• As the Test was Computer Based students had the option to Clear Response to change any option, they could mark it for Review, Save and next to proceed further.

• Students had to give biometric attendance for which they had to report at 7:30 am for Paper-1 and 12:45 pm for Paper-2.

The JEE Advanced results likely to be declared on Sunday, June 10, 2018 10:00 am on the official website http://jeeadv.ac.in.

The 1.65 lakh students (20%) were shortlisted from JEE (Main). Though 2.3 lakh students qualified to take JEE (Advanced), around 30% of the eligible candidates dropped out of the race for the coveted IIT seat.

This year, around 10,43,739 candidates appeared for JEE Main 2018 examination. A total of 1,80, 331 boys cleared the exam, with 50,693 girls qualifying for the next stage.

As per the JEE Main 2018 results, as many as 2,31,024 candidates have qualified for appearing in JEE Advanced 2018.

While IITs have been taking several measures to get more foreign students on the campus, only 36 students have sought to appear for the test.

The candidates, who were not able to submit registration fee on time (despite the extension of the last date), have been allowed to sit for the examination by paying the fee through a demand draft.
