Minority cut-offs at NM & Mithibai colleges go north

PUBLISH DATE 24th June 2018

Two more institutes announced their first minority and in-house First Year Junior College (FYJC) lists on Saturday and as expected, the cut-offs rose across all streams compared to last year.

The Gujarati minority merit list at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics, Vile Parle, saw a rise of more than 1% as compared to last year. The in-house merit cut-off at the institute was up at 91.6% from 2017’s first list cut-off of 90%. The top five students on the merit list have scores between 98.33% and 97.6%. Principal Parag Ajgaonkar said, “The only trend we have observed till now is a 1.6% rise in our minority merit list compared to last year.”

At Vile Parle’s other popular college, Mithibai, too, minority cut-offs spiked while the in-house ones remained similar to 2017. In the bi-focal science courses, the first student to get on to the minority list has 77% in electronics as compared to 71.7% last year; computer science scores rose from 83.04% to 85.96%.

Rajpal Hande, principal of Mithibai college, said they were yet to determine which board the top-scorers come from. “We are also seeing a rise in demand for commerce courses. This year, the minority cut-off was 88.60% in commerce compared to 86.20% last year.” Arts also saw a 2.5% rise whereas general science for Mithibai college remained the same at 70% as compared to last year.

Explaining why the arts cut-offs have been rising year on year, Hande said, “In the recent years, the opportunities for students in the arts stream have widened a lot and with no practicals, they don’t have to spend long hours in colleges. This gives them a chance to pursue various other things for their development.” The arts cut-offs, however, are high only a few handful top colleges in the city.

Earlier this week, the first minority cut-off list was announced at St Xavier’s College, Fort. The cutoff rose by 4% in both the arts and science stream. The first merit lists for open category in all colleges are expected to be announced on July 5.
