NEET 2018 to have same set of question papers for all languages, CBSE tells apex court

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, NEET 2018 online application form is expected to be released next week. Ahead of the release of the notification, the Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE has confirmed that all the set of question papers for all languages would be same for the NEET 2018 examination. The board confirmed this to the Supreme Court on Thursday that only one question paper would be set for NEET 2018 from this year. This paper would then be translated to the different regional languages.

NEET 2017 was conducted in ten languages which included English, Hindi and 8 regional languages of Bengali, Assamese, Gujarati, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Oriya and Kannada. The board soon came under controversy when the papers of regional languages were said to have a different difficulty level. Many students had approached the Supreme Court, requesting for the examination to be cancelled. The SC termed the practice of different question papers for different languages illogical and asked CBSE to conduct the examination in a uniform manner. Related News | NEET 2018 News update: NIOS, Open School students eligible to apply for exam, MCI asked to reverse order

CBSE's counsel, Tara Chandra Sharma appeared before the bench of Justices Arun Mishra and S Abdul Nazeer. She confirmed CBSE's decision to set only one question paper for all the students. The students who had opted for vernacular languages would then get the same paper translated for them in the preferred medium. TOI quotes SC over the difference in the question paper, "It is an illogical practice. How will you evaluate the competence of students when their questions are different? There is no reason for setting different question papers. There must be the same question paper for all students who take the exam in Hindi, English or another language." The board had contended that the level of difficulty was the same. However, it has now acceded to the have same question papers for all languages.

NEET 2018 would be conducted on May 6, 2018, as per reports. Also, NEET 2018 may be conducted in Urdu as well as the languages mentioned above. Students are advised to note that in case of any discrepancy in the question, the English version of the question would be considered final. Also, students would be provided with the English questions alongside the regional languages. NEET 2018 notification is expected to release on January 31, 2018
