SPPU admission prod to colleges

PUBLISH DATE 14th September 2018

Savitribai Phule Pune University has asked its affiliated colleges not to deny admission in the first year to students who cleared their Class XII supplementary board examination that was held in July-August.These students had failed the regular board examinations held in February-March but cleared the supplementary examinations held by the state board.

Despite passing the supplementary exams, they were finding it difficult to get admission to colleges due to either unavailability of seats or laxity on the part of the colleges, said student activists who brought the problem to the fore.

A student from a city college said, “My cousin passed the supplementary exam but he is yet to get admission in any college. The colleges we approached denied admission stating that their admission process was already over. Sometimes colleges just say no because they don’t want to re-start the admission process.”

Another problem that students face is lack of seats in most city colleges. Kalpesh Yadav, a youth activist, had raised the issue about two weeks ago.

“The whole point of conducting supplementary exams and declaring the results before September, instead of the old system where supplementary exams used to take place in October, was to ensure that students who passed the exam could join the next step in higher education without losing a year. But here there seems to be only a half-hearted attempt to do so as without a proper procedure students, who pass, will not be able to get into a senior college and, hence, may fall out of the education system,” said Yadav.

“No student should lose an academic year. For this purpose, students who failed Class XII board examinations were allowed to appear for supplementary examination in July-August. Students who passed this examination should be allowed to take up vacant seats in colleges in the first year of bachelor’s courses. Hence, all affiliated colleges are asked to follow this and give admission as per the procedure to students who approach them,” said a letter signed by deputy registrar, Savitribai Phule Pune University.
