Students may give IIT-JEE, CAT and other computer-based exams from home in future

PUBLISH DATE 21st November 2018

Competitive examinations like the IIT-JEE, CAT and other computer-based exams in India may take a different avatar altogether in future. Given the stress associated with these exams, technology may come handy to provide some comfort to candidates.

In the coming years, it’s likely to become possible that these computer-based tests could be taken from anywhere candidates want. They would no longer need to visit an exam centre to appear for a computer-based test and simply log-in from home to take the test.

“Infact, why just home? In future, you can simply be at some beach or hills and take computer-based exams like IIT-JEE, CAT or government service exams from your mobile. The technology to facilitate this is possible and provided if authorities want, we can provide the platform for such examinations,” said Venguswamy Ramaswamy, Global Head, TCS iON.

For those unaware, around 80% competitive computer-based exams are conducted by using technology solutions provided by TCS iON. This includes academic as well as service exams.

Of course, you would not be able to write the next IIT-JEE from your mobile sitting at a beach in Goa. But the fact that it is technologically possible to allow a candidate to take a national level competitive exam like CAT or IIT-JEE from wherever they want to is really something to look forward to in future.

Human intervention in computer-based tests is minimal. Also, with fingerprint scanner, front camera and mics that are common in all smartphones, customised exam apps could be created to ensure that the candidate cannot resort to unfair means.

While it is too early to comment on how exactly this may turn out in future, Ramaswamy assures of one thing-- that it would be impossible to cheat and go unnoticed. “There are already enough checks in place to ensure integrity of computer-based tests even today,” he adds.

Talking about the present scenario and instances of cheating in computer-based exams, Ramaswamy suggests that candidates do not fall for such scams as it would only land them behind the bars.

Ramaswamy stressed on the fact that today’s computer-based tests are cheat-proof and there is very little human intervention in them. “The test are designed in such a way that it is impossible to cheat,” he adds. So, the next time you meet a tout who claims he can help you to clear a computer-based test, don’t fall in trap. Not just be because it is wrong to cheat, but also he or she is simply duping you of your money.
