Complete Guide to CLAT: Exam Pattern, Eligibility & Smart Prep Tips
The CLAT Exam (Common Law Admission Test) is the most popular way to apply for an undergraduate or postgraduate program in law at one of the 24 National Law Universities (NLUs) across India, including NLSIU Bangalore and NALSAR Hyderabad. The exam is administered by the Consortium of NLUs and is widely regarded as one of the most difficult law entrance exams in India, therefore by familiarising yourself with the content, it can provide you with a clear advantage. The CLAT is run as an offline pen-and-paper examination that contains a total of five different sections: 1.
English Language - This section consists of comprehension-based questions which test your ability to read and perform inference. 2. Current Affairs & General Knowledge - This section consists of questions that are based upon recent legal and other world developments.
3. Legal Reasoning - This section will give you passages and test your ability to apply legal principles (you will not need any previous legal knowledge). 4.
Logical Reasoning - This section tests your ability to recognise pattern(s), develop arguments and critically think. 5. Quantitative Techniques - This section contains basic mathematics (up to class 10) and questions based upon data interpretation.
Each correct answer will receive +1 Mark, with −0. 25 marks being deducted for each incorrect answer. You will have 2 Hours to complete the exam.
Eligibility for the exam includes being either in your final year of or having successfully completed your 12th Grade from a recognised Board; achieving a minimum of 45% (40% SC/ST) marks in Class 12 (although there is no upper age limit for the UG Programme). To adequately prepare for the CLAT, try to: Read newspapers every day to improve your General Knowledge and Legal Awareness; Practice comprehension passages on a regular basis; and, Take timed mock exams on a regular basis. When preparing for the CLAT, your accuracy will be more important than your speed.
